A Rustic Fall Wedding at Vermont’s Waybury Inn

A small girl had stolen her seat on a Florida-bound flight, but Anne barely noticed. The magazine editor was focused not on the child but on the young girl’s father—the spitting image of a man she once dreamt of dating. It had been nearly four years since Anne laid eyes on Curt at a party where both were interested and neither was single—and now, Anne was staring at the face of Curt’s brother.

By the time they reached baggage claim, the other man was happy to play matchmaker for Curt who, Anne says, “happened to be newly single. Our first date was February 22, 2011, nearly four years to the day of our first encounter, and we have been together ever since.”

As the couple wrapped up a run through Central Park on a “gorgeous morning,” Curt fell to his knee feigning a hamstring injury, Anne says. But he was hardly hurt—he was proposing. “Unbeknownst to me until our rehearsal dinner six months later, Curt had planted a photographer in the park to capture the entire proposal,” Anne says. “Curt’s mother blew up a massive 10 foot by 10 foot screen of my face for all guests to see at the rehearsal. Needless to say, I was stunned.”

For their ceremony venue, Anne and Curt chose the classic, white-walled interior of St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption in Middlebury, Vermont.

“We wanted to have a very classic look for our wedding,” Anne says. For this couple, that meant “all-white flowers and a lot of greenery mixed in.”

The bride wore an ivory, A-line Vera Wang dress, which she covered at the shoulders with a vintage fur shrug, a gift from the groom’s aunt.

A mixture of garden roses, freesia, hydrangea, ranunculus, tulips, rosemary and mint, the bride’s bouquet surely smelled as lovely as it looked.

Guests found their seat assignments scrolled on ivory cards placed atop green ribbons.

Anne and Curt’s September wedding reception was held inside a tent provided by Celebration Rentals, Inc. on the grounds of the Waybury Inn. “It was the peak of fall foliage season in Vermont, so the beautiful shades of the changing leaves served as the ideal backdrop,” Anne says.

For the couple’s cocktail hour, “we served organic meats, cheeses and vegetables procured entirely from local Vermont farms,” Anne says. Their signature cocktail? A “delicious spritzer” made of all-natural grapefruit liqueur and Prosecco, “garnished with a lemon twist,” the bride says.

Waybury Inn catered the couple’s affair, serving pan-seared filet of beef wrapped with prosciutto and tender scallops with sweet bell pepper, spinach and orange slices.

The Sultans of Swing covered Etta James’ classic At Last for the couple’s first dance as husband and wife. “Our band was amazing,” Anne says.

Anne and Curt’s cake was also made by Waybury Inn. A three-tiered white confection, the cake was accented with pearl beading and topped with fresh flowers.

The getaway car was decorated with a handmade sign, a circle of hydrangea, and a deer head, a nod towards the rustic Vermont setting.

The couple traveled to Argentina for their honeymoon. “We began our trip in Mendoza, exploring local vineyards at the foot of the Andes mountains,” Anne explains, “then traveled to Buenos Aires.”
