Sublimated Custom Clothing

Sublimation is the most impressive and detailed way to customize your performance apparel, allowing for endless design possibilities. Designs can incorporate any colour, gradient, font or effect that you can think of. Designs can go across seams, under arms, along waistbands - all while maintaining the wicking properties of your jersey as you go to work on the playing field.

How it works...

Sublimation (as the term pertains to garment printing) is a process whereby ink is actually burned into the fibres of the garment, as opposed to the way ink is caked on top of the material in conventional silk screening.
The technical benefits of sublimation are as impressive as the design capabilities. Once a design has been sublimated it will, in effect, become part of the material. This means that the design will stretch with the fabric, it will allow sweat to wick through the design, and the image surface will not crack or fade over time, or with repeated washing.
There are two different ways to customize your jerseys using sublimation:

Full Body sublimation and Spot Sublimation

Full Body Sublimation

Full-body sublimation involves sublimating panels of fabric before they are sewn together, which allows you to maximize your design space and incorporate every square inch of jersey in your design. This requires a significant amount of design attention, since the art must be:

  •     Situated on a jersey template
  •     Nested for each player number/name and size
  •     Color corrected to ensure the colors produced match your expectations
  •     Printed onto giant sheets of specialized paper, and then sublimated into the jersey material

Spot Sublimation

Spot sublimation is a process by which your design is applied to a smaller area of a previously sewn white garment. Spot sublimation may be chosen over screen printing because you can effectively have as many colors as are in your logo (gradients and shading as well) without incurring the extra screen set up fees that would be associated with a multi-colored design.

Getting Started

To get started its best if you can send us a mock up of the jersey that you envision. A rough draft of your jersey should be fine, but please include as much design information as possible - font names, logo locations, logo and text sizes, basic colors, etc. If you are looking for a very specific shade of a color, please make sure that Pantone references are provided, as computer screens do not necessarily show colors accurately.

Artwork Guidelines

In order for our design team to produce high-resolution graphics and designs, it is necessary for us to use what is known as “vector” graphics. These graphics differ slightly from what is generally in everyday use on the internet and in print media and is known as “raster” artwork (example .jpg). The biggest advantage of “vector” artwork over “raster” artwork, is that it can be resized to any resolution without the loss of any quality.

When you are submitting Sponsor Logos, or Team Logo’s, we need these in “Vector” format, so they can easily be included by our designers in your body of work. Where you cannot supply detailed logo’s in Vector format, some art charges maybe incurred**. See your Sublimated® Apparel sales rep if you need any further information or assistance.

Examples of Raster Artwork vs. Vector Artwork;

Artwork Files and Fonts

Only professional software packages may be used to produce artwork. Although programs like Microsoft Word and Publisher are useful tools, they are not capable of producing art files of a quality necessary for imprinting purposes.

Any fonts used in the production of art files should be converted to curves (outlines) prior to submission. If future typesetting will be required, the original font files must be included with the artwork file.

Vector files

Sometimes called a geometric file, most images created with tools such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw are in the form of vector image files. Vector image files are easier to modify than raster image files. Another way to look at it is that every pixel in the image has an X and a Y axis, this allows easy resizing without loss of quality.

EPS (Vectorised) - (Preferred)

Encapsulated Postscript file: An alternative picture file format that allows PostScript data to be stored and edited and is easy to transfer between Macintosh, Windows machines, and other systems. - .eps files from CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator work best. Please note Sila® Apparel CANNOT use Photoshop .eps files.

AI - (Preferred)

Adobe Illustrator File, the very best in quality to recreate your artwork in the printing process.

Techinical Specifications

Sublimated® Apparel sublimation provides the tool in which to create, design and produce an unlimited number of unique, and personalised garments, limited only by imagination. The quality is second to none, and the colours are vibrant and alive. Garments are colour fast, and because of the processes used, are not susceptible to fading and wash out. Sublimation is ideal for long or short runs, and with our “IN HOUSE” design team, there are no hidden set up charges or artwork charges.*

The Sublimation Process

Sublimated® Apparel Sublimation works by dying the fabric with colour, allowing the fabrics natural wicking properties to be maintained. The dye is vaporised, and embedded into the fabric, meaning there is no chance of colours bleeding, or washing out, and one of the biggest advantages over “screen printing” and other processes is that your logo’s and artwork will never peel off!

How it works :

The basic dye sublimation process uses special heat-sensitive dyes to print graphics, text and virtually any image onto special transfer paper. The paper is then placed on the pre-cut fabric pattern and both are placed into a heat press. When the heating cycle is completed, the image on the paper has been transferred to the item and has actually reformed into or underneath the surface. Run your finger across the surface of a sublimated garment and you will feel nothing.
The reason for this is that sublimation is always done on a polyester, polymer, or polymer-coated item, in the case of team uniforms 100% polyester garments. At high temperatures, the solid dye converts into a gas without ever becoming a liquid. The same high temperature opens the pores of the polyester fabric and allows the gas to enter. When the temperature drops, the pores close and the gas reverts to a solid state. It has now become a part of the fabric.
This is why dye sublimation can’t be done on natural materials, such as 100% cotton. Natural fibers and non-coated materials which have no "pores" to open cannot accept the gas vapor. The dye particles are designed to bond with polyester, and ignore everything else. It is like trying to mix oil and water with most natural materials.
A dye impregnates color into a material and this color change is permanent. Sublimation refers to the change from the solid, to the gaseous state without becoming liquid.
Dye sublimation refers to solid dye particles that are changed into gas using heat and pressure, which then bond with any polymers present and change back into a solid.
Dark materials cannot be used with the sublimation process so all of our dye sublimated apparel starts out as solid white fabric. Garments decorated with a dye sublimation transfer cannot be removed like images on shirts decorated with screen printing.
Again, this is not ink that sits on top of the fabric; it is a dye that penetrates the fiber of the fabric. This is why all of our dye sublimated team uniforms are guaranteed to never fade, crack or peel.
